The Work Opportunity Tax Credit may now be extended to the spouses of members of the United States Armed Forces
Many Americans know that Veterans face employment barriers when trying to re-enter the workforce. Luckily, there are many organizations and job boards dedicated to helping Veterans find work. There is even a government incentive (Work Opportunity Tax Credit) of a tax credit up $9,600 for employers who hire qualified Veterans. But what about the families of active duty military? Many of them face similar employment challenges.
While military spouses are some of the most supportive, dedicated and resourceful people out there, they often have difficulty finding employment. Many spouses struggle to find work because employers know that they may not be a long-term employee. Due to changes in military assignment, many have to relocate their families every two to three years, often overseas. Generally, employers want to hire, invest and train employees they know will be long term. This creates an employment gap for non-enlisted spouses and an obstacle for them to find work that matches their education and skills. According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce , unemployment rates for military spouses far exceed that of the national average.
Luckily, the Military Spouse Hiring Act ( H.R. 2912 ) has been recently proposed to Congress to amend the IRS Code and expand the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) to include the hiring of a qualified military spouse. Under the proposed bill, employers could earn a tax credit equal to a portion of the wages paid to those spouses, which could be $2,400 or more.
